When you donate to First Literacy, you help fund innovative classes and programs that give thousands of adult learners the necessary tools to achieve their goals and support their families. You help graduates from Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs get the financial and educational support they need to pursue a college degree or advanced skills training. You help create professional development opportunities for the staff and teachers of ABE and ESOL programs so that they can share and incorporate best practices to improve their programs and their own teaching skills.

Phillis Wheatley was an inspiring African American woman who transcended the social boundaries of her time through the power of the written word. Each spring First Literacy celebrates and thanks donors who have given a gift of $250 or more at a special reception. These donors help continue Phillis Wheatley’s legacy by supporting the efforts to give others the power to read, write, speak, and understand English.
First Literacy is a 501 (c) (3) organization. Your gift is fully tax deductible.

I want to thank First Literacy for the opportunity you gave me and my fellow scholarship recipients. You not only challenged us to look at things in a different way but you showed us that everything is possible. I really thank you and your generous benefactors for the opportunity.
