All recipients must be recent graduates of Greater Boston adult literacy programs. To learn more about the Scholarship Program, or to apply, download the flyer for students, the notice to programs, or the application

Our Scholars have overcome many obstacles to continue their education;  they are determined and willing to work hard. Yet, the way for these students is not always easy.  Most are heads of households with deep financial and care-giving responsibilities. Living on low wages with few documented skills, they face problems of job insecurity, poor health care, and housing and transportation problems. What resonates from all First Literacy Scholars is their resolution to improve their lives through education. While many of these adults are the first in their families to attend college, we know they will not be the last.

First Literacy Scholarships have helped over 375 adult learners with mentoring and monetary support as they continue on to higher education, taking the next step in improving their lives.  You can help »

First Literacy’s College Mentoring Program

First Literacy is now sponsoring a peer mentoring program, in which past and continuing First Literacy scholars who have completed at least one year of college serve as mentors for other former ABE students who are “new” First Literacy scholarship recipients. One step ahead of those they are helping, First Literacy mentors meet regularly with new scholars, working with them on issues such as time management, study skills, and writing papers for their classes. Mentors receive ongoing support from First Literacy’s Director of Programs as well as a stipend for their efforts. This fall, nine new First Literacy scholars have been matched are meeting with eight mentors. Reports are that all are faring well, mentors and new scholars alike!
